Do cover letters still matter?

When there’s a field for one, skipping it can read as low interest, and hiring managers at smaller companies often read them. A short, specific letter costs little and can tip a close decision.

What structure works?

  • Why them: one concrete reason this company and role, taken from the posting or their product.
  • Proof: two short stories that map your real results to their top two needs.
  • Close: what you’d bring in the first months, and a simple thank you.

Keep it to 250–350 words. Use the hiring team’s name if you know it.

What should you never write?

  • “I am writing to express my interest in…”
  • A rewrite of your resume.
  • Generic praise that fits any company.
