Software Engineer resume example that passes the ATS (2026)

Updated November 5, 2026

Engineering screens match languages, frameworks and systems by exact name, then a recruiter looks for scope and impact: what you built, at what scale, with what result.

Sample Software Engineer resume

A fictional candidate at fictional companies, written in a simple one-column layout that applicant tracking systems read cleanly. Copy the structure; replace every detail with your own.

Sam Rivera (fictional)

Summary

Backend engineer with 6 years building payment and checkout services. Known for making slow, fragile systems fast and reliable; led two service migrations end to end.

Experience

Senior Software Engineer, Harbor Pay (fictional)

2022 to present

  • Rebuilt the checkout service in Go, cutting p95 latency from 900 ms to 210 ms at 3,000 requests per second.
  • Led the move of 40 services to Kubernetes on AWS, reducing infrastructure cost by 28%.
  • Added contract tests and a CI gate that cut production incidents from 6 to 1 per quarter.

Software Engineer, Fieldnote Apps (fictional)

2019 to 2022

  • Built a TypeScript and Node.js API serving 1.2M monthly users, with 99.9% uptime over two years.
  • Cut PostgreSQL query time on the reporting page from 8 seconds to 400 ms with indexes and caching.

Education

B.S. Computer Science, State University (fictional)

How hiring managers screen a Software Engineer

The first pass is usually a recruiter, not an engineer. They have a short list of must-haves from the hiring manager (a language, a cloud, years at a level) and search or skim for those exact words. If the posting says TypeScript and your resume only says JavaScript, a search for TypeScript will not find you.

If you pass that, an engineer reads the resume for about a minute. They look for the systems you owned, the scale they ran at (users, requests, data), and a result they can believe: latency, cost, incidents, release speed. Bullets that describe tasks without outcomes read as junior, whatever the title.

For senior roles they also look for reach beyond your own code: design decisions you led, migrations you drove, people you mentored. A GitHub link helps when the work there is real and recent, and hurts nothing when it is missing.

ATS keywords for a Software Engineer resume

Common in Software Engineer postings. Mirror the exact wording of the job you apply to, and only use a keyword when a real bullet backs it up.

How to adapt this sample to a real posting

  1. Read the posting and mark its must-haves. For a Software Engineer, these are usually a few hard skills (such as system design and microservices) and one or two tools (such as Python or Java).
  2. Use the job title from the posting in your headline if it honestly describes your work. Recruiters often search by titles like Software Engineer or Software Developer.
  3. Write a two-line summary naming your area, your years of experience and one result. Keep it specific to this kind of role.
  4. For each must-have you really have, make sure one bullet shows where you used it and what changed. Leave out anything you could not discuss in an interview.
  5. Save it as a one-column Word file or text-based PDF, then check your keyword match against the posting before you apply.

Mistakes that get it filtered out

Interview questions to prepare

  1. Walk me through a system you designed end to end. What would you change now?
  2. Tell me about a production incident you handled.
  3. How do you decide when code is good enough to ship?
  4. Describe a disagreement in code review and how it ended.

Prepare each one as a STAR story: how the STAR method works.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a software engineer resume be?

One page up to about 8 years of experience, two pages after that. Recruiters skim the top third, so put your strongest recent role and your main languages there.

Should I list every language I know?

No. List the ones you could be interviewed on today, and make sure each appears in at least one bullet. A long list with no evidence reads as padding.

Do I need a GitHub link?

It helps if the work there is yours, recent and readable. It is not required, and most screens never open it. Your bullets matter more.

How do I show impact if I do not have metrics?

Use what you can verify: latency before and after, incidents per quarter, build time, number of users or services, or time saved for a team. A rough but honest number beats none.

Should I put a skills section at the top?

A short skills line near the top helps recruiter searches. Keep it to the tools in the posting that you have really used, and back them up in your bullets.

Tailor your Software Engineer resume to a real job.
