How hiring managers screen a DevOps / Platform Engineer
Recruiters screen platform roles almost entirely on tool names. The posting usually names a cloud, an infrastructure-as-code tool and a container platform, and a resume that says “cloud experience” instead of “AWS” or “Terraform” often never comes up in a search.
The hiring manager then reads for outcomes. Platform work is invisible when it goes well, so they look for numbers that make it visible: availability, mean time to recovery, deploy frequency, environment setup time, and cloud spend. They also check scale: how many services, clusters, regions or engineers depended on what you built.
On-call and incident experience matters more than most candidates expect. A line about leading an incident review or writing runbooks tells the reader you have been trusted with production, which is the real question behind most platform interviews.

How to adapt this sample to a real posting
- Read the posting and mark its must-haves. For a DevOps / Platform Engineer, these are usually a few hard skills (such as infrastructure as code and CI/CD) and one or two tools (such as AWS or GCP).
- Use the job title from the posting in your headline if it honestly describes your work. Recruiters often search by titles like DevOps Engineer or Platform Engineer.
- Write a two-line summary naming your area, your years of experience and one result. Keep it specific to this kind of role.
- For each must-have you really have, make sure one bullet shows where you used it and what changed. Leave out anything you could not discuss in an interview.
- Save it as a one-column Word file or text-based PDF, then check your keyword match against the posting before you apply.
More example bullets to adapt
The formula: an action, what you did, and a number. Replace every detail with your own results.
- Introduced canary releases with Argo Rollouts; failed deploys reaching customers fell from 8 to 1 per quarter.
- Set up Prometheus and Grafana dashboards with service-level objectives for 30 services, replacing noisy threshold alerts.
- Cut CI build time from 22 to 7 minutes with caching and parallel test runs, saving about 400 engineer hours a month.
- Led 12 blameless incident reviews and tracked every follow-up action to closure.
Mistakes that get it filtered out
- A tool list with no reliability or cost result.
- No scale: services, clusters, regions or traffic.
- Leaving out incident and on-call experience.
Interview questions to prepare
- Tell me about the worst outage you handled. What changed afterward?
- How would you design CI/CD for 50 microservices?
- How do you decide what to alert on?
- How have you reduced cloud cost without hurting reliability?
Prepare each one as a STAR story: how the STAR method works.
Frequently asked questions
Should a DevOps resume list certifications?
Yes, if they match the posting, such as AWS Solutions Architect or CKA. Put them in their own short section, and make sure your bullets show the same tools in real use.
How do I show impact when platform work is invisible?
Use before and after numbers: availability, recovery time, deploy frequency, build time, setup time or monthly spend. Those are the metrics hiring managers already track.
DevOps, SRE or platform engineer: which title should I use?
Use your real title, then mirror the posting’s wording in your headline and summary. Recruiters often search all three, but the exact phrase in the posting is the safest match.
How many tools should I list?
List the ones you have run in production and could discuss in depth, usually 10 to 15. Group them by cloud, containers, infrastructure as code and observability so they are easy to scan.
Does on-call experience belong on a resume?
Yes. One line about rotation size, incidents led or runbooks written shows you have owned production, which is what most platform interviews test.
