How hiring managers screen a UX Designer

Recruiters screening UX designers look for methods more than tools: user research, usability testing, wireframes, journey maps, information architecture. Figma is expected, but the method words are what separate a UX profile from a visual or graphic design one.

The hiring manager opens your portfolio looking for process. A good UX case study shows the problem, what you learned from users, the options you tried, why you chose one, and what changed after launch. Your resume should hint at each of those in a line, so the case study feels like a deeper version of a story they already liked.

Evidence of working with real users matters a lot. Numbers like interviews run, tests completed, or task success rates show you did the research rather than assumed it. For in-house roles, managers also look for how you shared findings with product and engineering.

How to adapt this sample to a real posting

  1. Read the posting and mark its must-haves. For a UX Designer, these are usually a few hard skills (such as user research and usability testing) and one or two tools (such as Figma or FigJam).
  2. Use the job title from the posting in your headline if it honestly describes your work. Recruiters often search by titles like UX Designer or UX/UI Designer.
  3. Write a two-line summary naming your area, your years of experience and one result. Keep it specific to this kind of role.
  4. For each must-have you really have, make sure one bullet shows where you used it and what changed. Leave out anything you could not discuss in an interview.
  5. Save it as a one-column Word file or text-based PDF, then check your keyword match against the posting before you apply.

Interview questions to prepare

  1. Walk me through a case study where research changed your direction.
  2. How do you decide which research method to use?
  3. Tell me about a time stakeholders ignored your findings. What did you do?
  4. How do you measure whether a design worked after launch?

Prepare each one as a STAR story: how the STAR method works.

Frequently asked questions

What should a UX designer resume include?

A portfolio link at the top, the research and design methods you use, and bullets that show a problem, what you learned from users and the result. Keep it to one page if you have under 8 years of experience.

How is a UX designer resume different from a product designer resume?

A UX resume puts research, information architecture and testing first. A product designer resume usually adds more on visual design, design systems and shipping features with engineering.

How many case studies should my portfolio have?

Two or three strong ones beat six thin ones. Each should show the problem, your process, the decision and the outcome.

Can I get a UX job without a design degree?

Yes. Many UX designers come from research, psychology, writing or support roles. Show the methods you have used on real projects, and describe them with numbers.

Should I include UX certificates?

List them in a short section if they match the role, such as a Nielsen Norman Group or Google UX certificate. They help most early in your career; later, project results matter more.
