Interview prep with the STAR method

Prepare stories once and reuse them: how to structure answers, which questions to expect, and what to ask back.

What is the STAR method?

A way to answer behavioural questions with a clear story: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Spend most of the time on your actions and finish with a measurable result.

Which stories should you prepare?

  • A big win with a number
  • A conflict or hard trade-off
  • A failure and what you changed
  • Leading without the title
  • A fast learning curve
  • A time you improved a process

Six strong stories cover most behavioural questions. Screenpass asks for these during onboarding and maps them to each role’s likely questions.

What should you ask the interviewer?

  • What does success look like in the first 90 days?
  • What’s the hardest problem the team is facing this year?
  • How do decisions get made between product, design and engineering?
  • What made the last person in this role successful?

Frequently asked questions

How long should an interview answer be?

About one to two minutes. Lead with the result if the interviewer seems short on time.
