How hiring managers screen a Recruiter / Talent Acquisition
Talent leaders screen recruiters on three things first: the kind of roles you hire (technical, sales, hourly, executive), how many you filled, and whether you worked full cycle or only sourced. Make all three obvious in the first lines of each job.
Next come the tools. Recruiting teams live in their ATS and sourcing tools, so they search for names: Greenhouse, Lever, Workday, Ashby, LinkedIn Recruiter, Gem. If you ran interview loops and scorecards in Greenhouse, say Greenhouse.
The hiring manager then reads for partnership and metrics: time to hire, offer acceptance rate, pipeline diversity, and how you pushed back on unclear requirements. Recruiters who can show they improved a process, not only filled seats, stand out.

How to adapt this sample to a real posting
- Read the posting and mark its must-haves. For a Recruiter / Talent Acquisition, these are usually a few hard skills (such as full-cycle recruiting and sourcing) and one or two tools (such as Greenhouse or Lever).
- Use the job title from the posting in your headline if it honestly describes your work. Recruiters often search by titles like Recruiter or Technical Recruiter.
- Write a two-line summary naming your area, your years of experience and one result. Keep it specific to this kind of role.
- For each must-have you really have, make sure one bullet shows where you used it and what changed. Leave out anything you could not discuss in an interview.
- Save it as a one-column Word file or text-based PDF, then check your keyword match against the posting before you apply.
More example bullets to adapt
The formula: an action, what you did, and a number. Replace every detail with your own results.
- Sourced and hired the first 5 engineers for a new data team in 4 months.
- Built a hiring dashboard in Excel that showed pass-through rates by stage for every open role.
- Ran campus recruiting at 6 universities, resulting in 18 intern hires.
- Closed 3 senior candidates holding competing offers by working with the hiring manager on scope and start dates.
Mistakes that get it filtered out
- No hiring volume or the kinds of roles you hired.
- Leaving out the ATS you ran.
- No time-to-hire or offer acceptance metrics.
Interview questions to prepare
- How do you source for a hard-to-fill role?
- Tell me about a hiring manager you had to push back on.
- How do you close a candidate with a competing offer?
- Which metrics do you track for your pipeline?
Prepare each one as a STAR story: how the STAR method works.
Frequently asked questions
What numbers should a recruiter resume include?
Hires per year, the types of roles, time to hire and offer acceptance rate are the most useful. Add pipeline or diversity metrics if you tracked them.
Should I list every ATS I have used?
List the ones you could run day to day without training, and put the one named in the posting first if you have used it. A short list with depth beats a long one.
How do I move from agency to in-house recruiting?
Show full-cycle work, long-term relationships with hiring managers and any process you improved. In-house teams worry agency recruiters only care about placements, so show partnership.
Do recruiters need certifications?
Rarely. Sourcing or HR certificates can help early in a career, but hiring volume and results matter far more to the people screening you.
How should I describe sourcing skills?
Name the channels and tools you used and what came out of them, for example “sourced 40% of engineering hires through LinkedIn Recruiter and Gem campaigns”.
